I am sitting here at my home PC concluding the Case Diaries for my employer as it is the last day of the month. As I finished them I decided to write this long overdue letter to Roundabout. I came through the doors of AA over ten years ago now, and celebrated ten years continuous sobriety in March 2006. I came to AA in order to get some assistance in dealing with my bout drinking. I was living a horrendous life, and, sadly, this was being inflicted on my two beautiful daughters, then aged 24 and 17. Today, ten years down the line, a lot of mistakes made, but thankfully not the biggest one (by lifting the first drink). Getting into the Programme of Recovery, having a Higher Power in my life which I choose to call God, a very patient and spiritual sponsor and attempting to be a better person on a daily basis, have allowed me to have the quality of life I have today. Yes, I have material things, but what are they without sobriety? My two beautiful daughters are now 27 and 34. We have a wonderful relationship and they are my best friends. My elder daughter blessed me with my first granddaughter (called after Gran who would credit it) almost one year ago. My main impetus to writing this letter was in my opening sentence. Today one of my jobs consists of advocating for people who have Korsakoffs Syndrome (wet brain) as a result of use and abuse of alcohol. This is the client group I choose to work with in the main. My work gives me immense satisfaction. I could easily have been one of these poor unfortunates. I thank God, my sponsor and my many, many friends within AA who have listened to me and had the patience to deal with my many character defects which I will work on until the day I die. I thank all members of AA for having the doors open and for being part of my tremendous journey. I thank you all I could not have done it alone. There but for the Grace of God.
